"I LOVE MINT DENTISTRY! As soon as I walked inside, I felt so welcomed. Office manager Chè offered me something to drink, an iPad and some Beats headphones to use while I wait. Then Ashley attended me with my teeth clean up. She took me to the room where they do clean ups, whitening, etc.. She is so sweet! THE CHAIRS ARE MASSAGE CHAIRS! They ask if you would like to watch Netflix or play any music you would like on Pandora. Ashley was the best! My teeth feel so much better, she made sure I was comfortable. I love everything about this Mint Dentistry Location! The whole staff is amazing! They provided me with my complementary whitening kit, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and a CHAPSTICK! I’m so glad I chose Mint Dentistry."- E.G. / Google / Jan 18, 2020
Jaw pain from TMD could be caused by an accident or trauma to your jaw, years of clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth (bruxism), or dental malocclusion (misaligned teeth). There are also several medical conditions that can cause TMD, including a growth (tumor) in the jaw joint or arthritis. For some patients, the underlying cause of their TMD may be unknown; however, if you're noticing symptoms, your dentist will still be able to treat your jaw with TMJ therapy. Some of the problems you may notice if you have TMD are tenderness or pain along your jawline, muscle spasms in your lower face, or if your jaw is feeling stuck or stiff. Some other symptoms associated with TMD are chronic headaches, plus hearing clicks, cracks, or pops when your jaw opens or closes.
What to Expect
Your diagnosis of TMD will begin as your team of MINT dental professionals asks about your symptoms and concerns, then performs a physical exam of your jaw. Your consultation and exam at our state-of-the-art practice includes many thoughtful touches and amenities to make sure you feel comfortable and safe. Once you sit back in a massaging treatment chair, we'll let you wear MINT sunglasses to protect your eyes and a set of Beats headphones. You can catch up on great shows or listen to music you choose while we perform your exam. To diagnose TMD, your dentist will evaluate your jaw movement, visible signs of dental malocclusion and bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching), as well as palpate your lower face and neck to feel if there is any swelling or tenderness. Your dentist might need a full-mouth series of digital x-rays and a bite analysis to find the underlying cause of your TMD so we can decide on the best method for treatment. Once your exam is complete and you've been diagnosed with TMD, we will explain your recommended TMJ therapy, which is usually orthodontics, a night guard, or a restoration like a bridge or crown.
Once we have identified your TMD, your dentist can suggest other ideas to be used at home when you have symptom flare-ups. This may include a soft foods diet, not biting your nails or hard objects, avoiding gum, hot or cold therapy to reduce jaw inflammation, and techniques to help you relax. Our team can also teach you jaw-strengthening exercises, write a prescription for muscle relaxers, plus suggest medicine to alleviate anxiety, chronic pain, or swelling. It's important to attend your recommended follow-up appointments, so our dentists can monitor the effectiveness of your treatment. If you still have pain or other symptoms, your dentist can adjust your therapy plan.
